The holidays are busy times, and they are just around the corner. Make sure you are following these principles to ensure a happy and tooth-healthy holiday season.

Brush: Brush your teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, and replace it every 3-4 months. If your family hasn’t replaced toothbrushes in a while, try buying toothbrushes in holiday colors and using them as small gifts!

Floss: Floss once daily, taking 2-3 minutes for each session. Use 18 inches of single-filament floss and a gentle sawing motion to slip the floss between teeth and remove the plaque and food particles. If you are just starting your flossing habit, it is normal to feel a little discomfort. Don’t let that stop you! If the discomfort persists for more than 2 weeks, talk with Dr. Kevin Oakes.

Candy: The holidays have a lot of sweets involved. Make sure you know how to handle them for maximum tooth health. Make sure you take all sweets in moderation! When you do choose to eat sweets, don’t graze on them for long periods of time. Eat a treat, then be done. Try chewing sugar-free gum afterward for 20 minutes. Then, be sure to brush and floss extra-thoroughly that day.
