Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder caused by interrupted airway interruptions or obstructed airways while you sleep. Sleep apnea disorder occurs in many individuals and should be treated as soon as symptoms begin to show. Although symptoms can often be difficult to spot, there are a few risk factors for sleep apnea to know about.

Sleep apnea has an assortment of risk factors, including allergies, nasal blockages, large tonsils, a large tongue, a small windpipe, a deviated septum, sinuses, a small jaw and even genetics. Males over the age of 40 are also more likely to show signs of sleep apnea than other demographics.

The two most common types of sleep apnea are central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea results when your airways are compromised while you sleep due to blockages. Another version of sleep apnea is central sleep apnea. With central sleep apnea, the signals sent from the brain to the muscles in a person’s chest instructing them to breathe while asleep, are not received.
